Gen-Zers are abandoning music streaming for a nostalgic dive into Mars Tapes, the UK’s sole cassette shop in Manchester.

The Tape Culture Revival

Alex Tadros, a music enthusiast, and owner of Mars Tapes, discusses the resurgence of cassette players among young music lovers.

Since its establishment in 2019, Mars Tapes has witnessed a substantial rise in cassette player popularity, especially among Gen-Z and millennials.

The increasing demand is attributed to the popularity of nostalgic-themed films and TV shows, like Stranger Things, set in the 1980s.

Alex notes that around 80% of their customers are teenagers and young adults exploring tape culture and discovering music not readily available on streaming platforms.

He emphasizes that Mars Tapes isn’t just a store; it’s becoming a part of visitors’ Manchester experience, attracting customers from Europe.

The Origins of Mars Tapes

Mars Tapes was founded by Alex Tadros and his partners after the success of their record label, ‘Sour Grapes Records.’

Amidst the vinyl resurgence, the group found cassette production more cost-effective, leading to the establishment of Mars Tapes.

Affordable Music and Quirky Collectives

The store, situated in Afflecks Palace, Manchester, focuses on affordable physical releases and creating a community for those who enjoy uninterrupted music listening.

While skeptics doubted its sustainability, Mars Tapes aims to contribute to a unique collective of music enthusiasts.

Mars Tapes offers a diverse range of tapes, sourced from eBay, charity shops, and car boot sales, with prices as low as £5.

However, rare finds, like a first-issue purple boxed cassette of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, have sold for £100.

From Lady Gaga to Factory Records

The store stocks tapes from both modern and classic artists, including Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beck, Blossoms, and rare Factory Records releases, creating a vibrant mix for cassette enthusiasts.

As the only tape shop in the UK, it not only caters to the nostalgia of older generations but also captures the curiosity and enthusiasm of a new wave of music lovers.

With the blend of affordability, diverse selections, and a community-centric approach, Mars Tapes has carved its niche, contributing to the rich tapestry of Manchester’s music scene. The cassette, once deemed obsolete, is now a symbol of cultural revival and a unique experience for music enthusiasts of all ages.
