In an out-of-this-world dining experience that could easily be mistaken for the opening scene of a thrilling sci-fi blockbuster, a surreal restaurant, reminiscent of a UFO, has recently been unveiled, afloat in the heart of the ocean.
The enigmatic venue, named Iris, was visited in July 2023 by influencer Mari Eriksmoen. This extraordinary culinary hub, bearing an uncanny resemblance to a giant, grey rock or spaceship, is tucked away amidst the serene waters of Hardangerfjord in Norway.
The fjord, characterised by its steep cliffs and abundant nature, provides a unique backdrop for this unusual restaurant. Mari, accompanied by her partner, later chronicled their other-worldly dining experience on TikTok (@MariEriksmoen), captivating social media users and racking up over 8.1 million views and 790,000 likes.
The experience has sent a frisson of excitement across the internet, with many dubbing it the onset of a horror film. Numerous users drew parallels with “The Menu”, the spine-chilling thriller featuring renowned actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes.
Mari and her partner embarked on their adventure, fetched by an electric boat and entertained en route with a thought-provoking short film on food waste. Upon arriving at the extraterrestrial-like location, the duo was presented with a sumptuous 18-course meal, set against the breath-taking views of the fjord.
The delectable dishes, including edible flowers, caviar, seafood, and lavish desserts – paired meticulously with wine, were as magnificent as the venue itself.
Despite the hefty price tag, Mari deemed the experience “expensive but so worth it”.
As expected, the TikTok post elicited a flurry of comments. One user quipped, “I know how this movie ends”, while another joked, “I can’t a fjord it”. Another user humorously expressed their hesitancy, referencing “The Menu” and commenting on their financial limitations.
However, the restaurant’s commitment to sustainability and local produce lends a thoughtful twist to the narrative. The menu, priced at NOK 3200 (£245.12) per person, tells a story that aligns with the restaurant’s ethos.
According to the restaurant’s website, “Our location guides every step we take at Iris, and we want our guests to experience the fjord, the mountains, and the ever-changing elements in the same all-encompassing way that we do every day.”
The gastronomic adventure starts with a boat ride from the idyllic town of Rosendal, incorporating multiple pit stops and concluding in the dining room where the scenic fjord and mountains make a stunning backdrop for their set tasting menu.
Anika Madsen, the head chef of Iris, is known for her fervour for marine ingredients and her deep-rooted commitment to sustainability.
Diners keen on embarking on this remarkable journey can make their reservations through the Iris restaurant website.
