A professional cleaner who was turned down for a job at McDonald’s now specialises in hoarder homes – and has revealed his most shocking cases.
James Fitzpatrick has always had a passion for cleaning, aiming to keep things spick and span whenever he can.
After applying for a role at McDonald’s and being rejected, the now 36-year-old became eager to turn this interest in a full-time business.
Now, while he helps people all across the country keep their homes tidy, he isn’t your average everyday cleaner.
He actually specialises in hoarder homes, where he transforms people’s rooms filled with clutter in a matter of hours – with one clip racking up over 108,000 views and thousands of likes.
“When I went to see my first house, it broke my heart to see how some people are living,” the professional cleaner, from Glasgow, told Absolutely Business.
“They explained that many cleaning companies had refused the work two years prior and it took them all these years to build up the courage to reach out again.
“I just couldn’t say no and leave them living the way they were.”
James has had to deal with his fair share of surprises while on the job, though.
He said: “Once, a home had rats in and we could hear them scratching at the walls, but we couldn’t see them.
“When we got to the last few bags, suddenly a big rat jumped out and literally chased us out of the house.
“I ensure to work closely with the client to make sure we don’t bin anything too sentimental, while explaining the reason we are there.
“For the ones who have physical health problems and can’t make the toilet, the smell of urine stored in bottles can be a bit much.
“But we know what we’re going into and won’t employ anyone with a weak stomach – gagging and the like won’t be tolerated on any job.
“A few years ago, we cleaned an older man’s house who was really struggling.
“He felt ashamed having his friends over, so only went to their homes for dinner.
“He had a lovely home, and after the clean-up, he was so happy that he burst into tears.”
James had tried his hand at multiple jobs before creating his business, including apprenticeships in joinery, electrical engineering and bricklaying.
But he was rejected when applying for those roles, too.
AL Scrubz Cleaning was formed in 2017 and began with cleaning ovens, where his mum, who is currently the manager, came on board to help out.
Now, he has a team of 25 people, who act as a “lifeline” for those struggling with hoarding.
He said: “I’ve seen firsthand how people’s lives can spiral when they are unable to let go of items or manage everyday tasks.
“For many, it starts small; one extra bag of rubbish left in a corner, leading to a collection of items piling up.
“Soon, there’s overwhelming clutter, making it difficult, if not impossible, for people to live safely or comfortably.
“There are physical limitations which prevent them from keeping up with regular household tasks, too.
“Sadly, those who suffer feel a deep sense of shame and avoid reaching out for help out of a fear of judgement and rejection.
“I saw the need and stepped in, especially after hearing about other people who had also been turned away by other cleaning companies.”
In the clip, he walks through a home filled to the brim with clutter.
The living room is shown covered in various items and rubbish, as well as the kitchen.
In the bathroom, the sink is stained with black muck and in the bath, there’s bin bags dumped in.
James then picks up some supplies, including lots of scrubbers and a mask.
In another clip, he reveals the before and after results.
He notes it took four days in total to make the home spotless.
As he gives another tour, the property looks unrecognisable.
Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions, with many people noting it’s not an easy job.
“Oft not for the faint hearted that job,” said Ryan.
Another user added: “That would fry my brain. Wouldn’t know where to start.”
“Unreal that, cleaning a skill, I wouldn’t even know where to start on a house like that,” someone else commented.
Gemma said: “Love this so sad that people struggle this much well done guys.”
“MY ANXIETY!!! I had to watch this in segments I couldn’t breathe,” added Amanda.
Someone else commented: “I would need to bathe myself for a week after this. Makes me feel itchy. Cracking job though.”
In 2021, he won ‘best cleaning company in the UK’ and since, has been invited back as a judge himself.
Now, he hopes to share his story and services to help people feel inspired to create their own business – and to show those who need help that there is a solution.
James added: “I hope this helps raise awareness, to let people know there are companies out there who will help you get your life back on track.
“Not only does a clean home look nice, but it also is great for mood boosting.
“Our work goes beyond cleaning; it’s about helping people reclaim their lives and a sense of dignity.
“If you have a family member that makes excuses for you not to go in their home, please check up on them.
“There is normally a reason why – and we can help.”
